March Meeting

Don Johnson (center pictured with Rose Ann Acosta and Barbara Thompson), is Master Naturalist and part of the Entomology group with Fort Bend Master Gardeners. He spoke on butterflies and hummingbirds. Don gave some great anecdotes as well as showed terrific pictures he has taken in his garden and elsewhere of hummers, butterflies, chrysalis and caterpillars. And some pretty flowers too.

He and Penny are quite involved in conservation and particularly in saving the Monarch Butterfly, which is quite distressed from weather changes, droughts, floods, pesticides, etc. He encouraged all of us to plant Butterfly and Milkweed as both food for the caterpillars and nectar sources for the butterflies. They cannot survive without it. Please avoid pesticides on these plants as they kill the caterpillars and butterflies. If you have aphids, wash them off with water.

Using a Saint Patrick's Day theme, Barbara Thompson, Pat Jones, Linda Miller, Diana Leggett, and Lynn Ellis had great food. Judy Pasadyn also contributed, but could not attend the meeting.

2014 Arbor Day Dedication

The Quail Valley Garden Club dedicated 4 trees March 13, 2014, in MacNaughton Park. Pictured in front of a newly planted but not budded-out imposing Mexican Sycamore, members and guests pose with Missouri City's own Paul Wiersbicki.

Arbor Day Chair Jerre Anne Wagner (gesturing and standing mid-picture) talks about the Missouri City tree matching program generously funded by the Nichols family. We were able to add 4 trees to MacNaughton Park because of their matching grant.

The White Oak is one of Paul's favorite trees. While it does well, it has not been a commonly used species of tree in our area.

 

 

 

The event was also a time for fellowship and enjoying the park.

 An Ironwood tree was the final tree dedicated. It was so nice to enjoy the vista in the park of Redbuds in the distance in full bloom and trees of various heights, colors and shapes.

The Nichols matching tree grant applies to various Missouri City Parks . . . It is making Missouri City more beautiful as well as the parks more enjoyable for years to come. Started in 2012, the family has renewed the program in 2013 and 2014. Below from the City's website . . . here's all you need to know!

Missouri City Tree Challenge
The Nichols Family of Quail Valley, has generously offered to match their neighbor’s tree donations, for up to 50 trees at Missouri City Parks. Starting in the Fall of 2012, trees will be planted at five city parks. Trees will average 6’-12’ tall at the time of planting. The City Forester will select the appropriate species and location for each tree sponsored. New Yard of the Month Sign

Many of us can't remember Quail Valley without a Yard of the Month . . . but it was time to "refresh" our sign as our recipients "refresh" and maintain their gardens. Chair Nancy Lindsay, President Barbara Thompson of Quail Valley Garden Club, and Barbara's handy spouse, Pete Thompson, along with the help of a local artist to paint the woodwork . . . inaugurate a new sign . . .

January 2014 Meeting

The new By-laws that were supplied to the members prior to the meeting were accepted unopposed.

Janice Scanlan also reported that the Treasurer's records conformed with an internal audit again Bank Statements, the budget was within expected amounts and with no areas of variance as of December 31, 2013.
