What ladies and don't we clean up nice!
Yes, we're not always in our gardening togs and clogs, and Jonel and Chuck Ankrum's hospitality and beautiful home were a lovely setting with a view of the water, bird feeders (I even saw an Orchard Oriole) and lovely hanging baskets . . .
There were hats, hats, and hats galore, but the biggest smile for me was Gretchen Cockrell's full lily, roots and all. However, it was somewhat dangerous to get too near as we had "dueling hats" at one point.
And that was the fun . . . with much good fellowship. And it didn't matter whether you wore a hat or not . . .there was fun for everyone.
This was a year to celebrate our many feats and show appreciation for Nancy Lindsay's leadership as President.
Just the variety of our hats demonstrate what a creative and interesting group of women. Such variety and many of our
hostesses wore the traditional Mop Head hats and aprons . . . It just
added to the fun.
President Nancy Lindsay welcomed us, Jo Ann Mayhall provided inspiration, and Cindy Calender of the scholarship committee provided a very moving speech of why the scholarship recipients were selected. We then had a little fun with some fun prizes for "hat wearing" coordinated by Jerre Anne Wagner. Joyce Smith shared some of our horticulture "survivors" after the severe winter and presented hostess Jonel Ankrum with a Escargot Begonia.
Nancy discussed her love of gardening and what she felt had been the highlights of the year as well as generously mentioned people she felt played key roles in our success.
Sarita Parker, pink flamingo hat and all, started the installation and installed the 2010-2011 Board pictured l to r of Nancy Lindsay, Parliamentarian; Linn Wells, Treasurer; Karen Meier, Corresponding Secretary; Barbara Thompson, Recording Secretary; Jo Ann Mayhall, 2nd Vice President/Membership; Penny Johnson, !st Vice President/Programs; and kneeling incoming President Janice Scanlan. Janice's message was balancing the past and history with the future and new and changing members' needs and interests.
The meeting's good fellowship was really enhanced by the "program" which was an English Afternoon Tea that Daughter of the British Empire and Garden Club Member Jackie Walker developed. As you can see from these pictures, Jackie functioned in both roles!
Social Chair Betty Vickroy with Jackie Walker and hostesses Ernestine Barr, Betty Verdino, Jerre Anne Wagner, Pat Hardman and Shirley Renfrow prepared, served and made an extremely memorable afternoon that was delicious and entertaining.
It included a recipe book prepared by Jackie and Betty that provided not only the program, but also some of the history, customs and techniques for English Afternoon Tea (which is less food than High Tea). You wouldn't know it from our lovely spread!
Highlights included our all three of our scholarship winners attending with Scholarship Chair Suzy Walters and Cindy Calender. Anne McBride was unable to attend. Elkins High School Counselor Elyce Nasseri attended as well and is in the picture below on the right. New member Judy Belt is in the foreground of the middle picture. And finally, just a little of the joy and appreciation Nancy and Janice felt for your honoring us with two wonderful gifts . . . and what's special is neither of us expected them! We both thank all of you for helping to make us look good with such a successful year!
And thanks to Patty McKeever and Jo Ann Mayhall for making "check-in" and membership dues collection "seamless."
It was a very good year!
As always, click on the pictures to enlarge them. If you have other pictures to share, contact Janice Scanlan. Thanks to Juanita Ayres, Shirley Renfrow and Virginia Moore for their photographs.
